Edinburgh is based around its Castle which sits on a great rocky outcrop. The Castle's oldest building is St Margaret's Chapel dating from the early 12th century. It was home to an English garrison from 1296 until 1313 but was retaken with daring surprise by the Scots during the Wars of Independence; the castle changed hands several times again over the next few hundred years. In 1566 a son was born to Mary Queen of Scots - James VI to be, within the castle. Today, you can see the Scottish Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny - on which the Kings of Scots were crowned throughout the ages.. Today, even a whole day visiting the Castle would not do it justice. Entry for those with disabilities is possible via courtesy vehicles, ramps and a lift. The city itself is a rich experience of beautiful buildings and monuments interesting to the specialist and the lay person alike. There are historical buildings and museums to suite most interest. During August, Edinburgh plays host to the Edinburgh Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as many other more specialist festivals and forums of music and entertainment. Just a few of the places to visit: |
